International Master Eugene Meyer and expert Dmitry Barash each had perfect 4-0 scores to split first place in the tournament. Phil Collier and Ilya Figelman scored 3.5 to tie for third place. Class winners included Mardon Yakubov and Oliver Kayende (sharing the Under 2000 and Under 1800 prizes with 3 points each) and Justin Toops and John Rouleau splitting the Under 1600 prize with 2.5 points.
International Master Larry Kaufman wins tournament, Greg Kearse wins DC title.
NM Noah Siegel won the 1996 national title.
1996 U.S. ARMED FORCES CHAMPIONSHIP David Hater led his Army teammates to victory in the 37th Annual Armed Forces Chess Championship held October 12 - 14, 1996. Hater scored 4.5 points in the annual 5 round event, taking clear first place and the Haskell Small trophy that signifies the championship.
Army had the team championship won entering the final round of the tournament, having sent a strong contingent of players from the West Point Academy.
Jon Leisner of Navy won second place on tie-breaks over Elvin Wilson of Air Force, each scoring 4 points.
