Scholastic Kickoff

October 12, 2002

The Scholastic Kick-Offs brought 109 players to the U.S. Chess Center on October 12. Perhaps the cancellation of outdoor sports throughout the region was responsible for the large attendance.

The tournament was divided into four sections by grade. Here are the results:

Grades 8 - 12: Victor Caballo of the District swept the competition. This was not a team tournament, but the Bell Multicultural High School team was in attendance and demonstrated that they will be a force in the high school league this year.

Grades 6 - 7: Benjamin Krause narrowly edged Jeffrey Peyser on tie-breaks, each player scoring 3½ points, drawing each other in the final game.

Grades 4 - 5: Jesse Freeman was the only player in his section to win all four games.

Grades K - 3: Jerry Wu and Patrick Dibble both won all four games of the tournament. Jerry was awarded the Championship trophy after defeating Patrick in a blitz play-off.
