Fairfax County Elementary School Championships
The U.S. Chess Center has run the Fairfax County, Virginia, Elementary School Chess Championship each year on the first Monday in June. The tournament is hosted each year by Haycock Elementary School in Falls Church. The 2007 team champion was Greenbriar West Elementary School.
Back: Coach Gary Connors, Rahul Ramraj, Varun Kripanandan, Billy Moncure, Graham Connors, and Team Father Tod Connors. Middle: Aditya Ponukumati, Joshua Lee, Brian Lee, Branden Kim. Front: William Li, Hans Li, Christine Li. By 2005, interest in chess had grown so much that the tournament outgrew the space available in which to run it. As a result, the tournament became an invitational event in which teams had to qualify to be invited. Schools qualified by doing well in major events (Nationals, State Championship, Elementary Team League) or in any of the large series of qualifying local events. If you would like to be invited to a qualifying event for 2007 - 2008, please contact David Mehler. Teams in the championship consist of two players from each grade (K-2, 3, 4, 5 & 6) plus the school champion. Teams are 11 players. No more than 11 players from any school may attend the tournament. Students play only others in their grade section. This is really an event with six separate tournaments in which the players each play four games. Nobody is eliminated from the tournament and every point counts towards the team score. Teams competing in the 2007 Championship were:
