Classes for Adults
The Center offers classes for beginner and intermediate adult players. Weeknight classes last 60 - 90 minutes. All classes are held at our headquarters at 1501 M Street, NW. Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. Next class starts February 15, 2012This is a four-week class for students who do not yet know all of the rules of the game, and possibly none of them. By the conclusion of the course, we expect all students to be able to play a credible game of chess. Registration fee: $95 ($70 for Center members.) Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Next class starts September 13, 2011This is a four-week class for those who know the rules of chess but want to learn elementary strategy. Registration fee: $95 ($70 for Center members). (Class meetings are September 13, 20 & 27, October 4.) Master Workshops
Four Wednesdays Starting May 11, 20117:30 p.m. FIDE Master Macon Shibut, three-time Virginia State Champion and the critically-accalaimed author of two chess books, will provide a non-systemic approach to playing chess. Using master and grandmaster games he will show how regular tournament players, using "rules of thumb," would be able to find the same moves played by players who have achieved high titles. Designed for adult tournament players of many levels. $50 for the series for the public, $40 for Center members. $15 per individual workshop. Parent/Child Classes
Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Call to Register. Next class begins November 8, 2009Three weeks of small-group lessons for a parent with his/her child. $145 per pair. No more than four pairs will be accepted. Child must be no older than third grade yet mature enough to have the capacity to learn chess. Private Lessons
Individualized lessons are available for adults at the rate of $50 per hour at the Center, or $80 per hour at your home
within the Washington metro area.
